About Biocoat
Biocoat, Inc., incorporated in 1991, is a privately-held corporation with administrative offices, manufacturing and R&D labs in Horsham, PA.
The Biocoat technology for immobilizing hyaluronan and other biopolymers has its origins in work done by Ellington M. Beavers, Ph. D. and his co-workers at Columbia University in the early 80's.
Business
Practices
Biocoat acquires biomaterials technologies by funding scientific and applied research at academic research facilities, through joint development projects with other companies, or cooperative research with academic researchers, and by licensing in of patents.
Biocoat develops practical applications of its technologies in partnership with established medical device companies, who license the HYDAK® coating technology from Biocoat.
The
Process Begins
Relationships with potential licensees for the coatings usually start with a Non-Disclosure Agreement and an exchange of technical information which familiarizes the medical device company with the HYDAK technology and Biocoat with the requirements of the biomedical application.
Biocoat conducts an initial feasibility study to demonstrate the applicability of the technology. Depending on the circumstances, this may be free of charge, the customer may fund the study, or the costs may be shared.
Assuming a positive outcome of the initial feasibility study, it is usually necessary to carry out more extensive product and process optimization. The potential licensee pays the expenses Biocoat incurs during this phase of development.
The License Agreement &
Technology Transfer
Next comes the negotiation of the License Agreement. With the license agreement in place, Biocoat will transfer the technology, enabling the licensee to implement the coatings process in its own facilities. Biocoat personnel are made available on-site to assist during the installation and start-up of the process.
Under the terms of the license agreement, Biocoat supplies the licensee with coating solutions and reagents and provides technical service.
Academic Cooperation
Biocoat will cooperate with academic researchers who are interested in studying the mechanical, physical, or biological properties or biomedical applications of immobilized hyaluronan. With a non-disclosure agreement in place, Biocoat will supply coating solutions, reagents and know-how in exchange for sharing the results of the research.
