HYDAK is Biocoat's registered trademark for its immobilized hyaluronan
coatings technology.
Application of the HYDAK Coatings is a relatively simple process using
conventional dip-coating equipment and curing ovens. HYDAK Coatings can
be used on both inside and outside surfaces and on most commonly used
polymers and metals.
Process Steps
| Pre-treatment | A simple solvent cleaning suffices for most substrates |
| Apply First Coat | Adhesive polymer coating, either water-based or in organic solvent |
| Cure First Coat | Usually 10-20 minutes in 60°C oven |
| Apply Second Coat | Aqueous solution of hyaluronan |
| Cure Second Coat | 1-2 hours in 60-70°C oven |
| Washing/Drying | To remove unreacted hyaluronan |
| Sterilization | Ethylene oxide recommended |

HYDAK Properties
The HYDAK system of coatings affords great flexibility in tailoring biocompatible
surfaces to the requirements of medical device applications.
Physical properties are readily adapted to meet the design criteria of medical
device applications:
- thickness
- wettability
- lubricity
- elongation
- flexibility
- abrasion resistance
- storage stability
- stability in contact with body
fluids

Biocompatibility
As one might expect for a material that is ubiquitous in the body, the
biocompatibility of hyaluronan-modified surfaces has been well-established
and confirmed by in vitro and in vivo tests including:
- cytotoxicity
- hemolysis
- acute systemic toxicity
- intracutaneous toxicity
- muscle implantation
- dermal irritation
- genotoxicity
